How to Use Tric Protein Soup: A Practical Guide

How to Use Tric Protein Soup: A Practical Guide

This article features our protein soup range. It is general information, not personalised nutrition or medical advice - your own protein targets and eating plan should come from your surgeon or nutrition team.

When "protein first" is easier said than done

If you've had bariatric surgery, or you're preparing for it, you’ve likely already heard the golden rule: “protein first.” While it’s easy to understand the importance of protein after surgery, for many people, the practical challenge is eating enough when portion sizes are reduced. In the early stages post-op in particular, when texture tolerance is limited, sometimes it takes a little creativity.

This is exactly why we created our protein soup range: an easy, versatile option for the times when hitting your protein target feels like hard work.

This is a practical guide to actually using it - where it fits, how to prepare it, and a few ways to work it into your day that you may not have considered.

What is Tric Protein Soup?

Tric Protein Soup is a savoury, collagen-based soup or broth powder that dissolves easily in hot water. It’s available in two hearty flavours: chicken or beef, and a single serve provides around 21g of protein. Collagen is an incomplete protein because it’s missing one of the nine essential amino acids that we need to obtain through diet. This means that the soup shouldn’t replace higher level proteins such as meat, chicken, fish or whey protein powder, but it can be a helpful addition alongside these foods. Collagen is a dairy-free protein option and it’s typically quite well tolerated which can be helpful in the early stages post-op when the digestive system may be more sensitive.

How to incorporate the soups into your routine

1. As a warming drink between meals

One of the reasons we created the soups was because people were already sipping on stock or broth between meals in the early stages post-op, and we thought - why not make this an opportunity to add protein.

Simply add a scoop to a mug, fill with hot water, stir and sip. This can be a helpful way to contribute towards protein and fluid needs in the early stages, when plain water is not always so well tolerated.

2. A high-protein stock alternative

Instead of using standard chicken or beef stock, make up a serve of protein soup as the liquid base when you cook. It lifts the protein content of whatever you are making while adding a tasty savoury flavour.

Practical examples:

  • As the stock for a homemade beef or chicken soup
  • Stirred through mince dishes to enhance the flavour and add protein
  • As part of the liquid in a casserole or slow-cooked dish
  • In place of water when cooking grains such as quinoa

As the broths are naturally salty, you may want to reduce the amount of salt you use in your cooking.

3. As part of your pre-op eating plan, as guided by your nutrition team

Some people choose to use the soups during the lead-up to surgery as an alternative to the pre-op shakes. Your bariatric nutritionist will guide you on this during your initial consultation, and discuss how the soups can be used as part of your preparation for surgery.

After surgery, the soup on its own is not a suitable meal replacement, but you could add cooked chicken and vegetables to make it into a more complete meal.

4. A protein boost for pureed and soft foods

As you move through the pureed and soft food stages, protein soup can be added to casseroles, mince dishes, or other soups to lift their protein content. In the soft food stage it can be mixed through or incorporated into the sauce or gravy of dishes to help make sure the texture is not too dry.

Summary

A high protein soup can be a flexible tool in your post-surgery kitchen. Beyond a simple bowl of soup, it works as a warming drink between meals, a savoury cooking base that lifts the protein of everyday dishes, and an easy addition to pureed or soft foods. If you’ve got more questions about meeting your protein needs after surgery, check in with your bariatric nutritionist.
